Ph meters

A pH meter is commonly composed of an electronic amplifier and two electrodes, a pH measuring electrode, a reference electrode or alternatively a combined electrode and some type of screen calibrated in pH units. The reference electrode has a known, constant and stable potential. In the pHmetro design we find rod-like structures, commonly made of glass.

The pH.measuring electrode has a glass bulb specifically designed to be selective to the hydrogen ion concentration, with an output in millivolts that varies as the alterations in the relative concentration of hydrogen ions inside and outside the bulb. The reference electrode output does not change with the activity of the hydrogen ions.

Types of pH meters a laboratory may need

Portable

Portable pH meter is a type of pH meter consisting of an electronic amplifier and a pair of electrodes, or also a combination electrode, and some type of screen calibrated in pH units. It usually has a glass electrode and a reference electrode, or a combination electrode.

The advantage of this device is that it allows us to mobilize and thus measure different types of substances in the field (field measurements). The electrodes used in this equipment are rod structures, usually made of glass, with a light bulb containing the sensor at the bottom. The glass electrode used to measure the pH has a glass bulb specifically designed to be selective to the concentration of hydrogen ions.

  • Automatic temperature compensation ensures accurate readings over the entire range.
  • The auto-read function detects and locks the measurement end point.
  • The expired calibration alarm prompts the user to calibrate the meter regularly.
  • The setup menu allows you to configure the number of calibration points, stability criteria, temperature unit, date and time, automatic shutdown, etc.
  • The restart function automatically resumes all settings to factory defaults.
  • Extended memory stores or retrieves up to 500 data sets.
  • USB communication interface for data transfer and timed interval readings.

PH Meters in Operation

A pH meter consists of three essential parts: a pH measuring electrode, a reference electrode and a high input impedance meter. The reference electrode has a known, constant and stable potential. The pH electrode can be considered as if it were a battery, with a voltage that varies according to the pH of the measured solution. The pH-determining electrode is a hydrogen-ion sensitive glass bulb, with a millivolt output that varies as the relative concentration of hydrogen ions within and outside the bulb changes.

The reference electrode output does not change with the activity of the hydrogen ions.  The pH electrode has a very high internal resistance, which makes it difficult to measure the voltage variation with the pH. Therefore, the input impedance of the pH meter and the dispersion resistances are important factors.
