What are the steps to use a muffle?

A muffle is an oven used in laboratories. It is a laboratory equipment specially designed for procedures requiring uniform exposure to very high temperatures. In other words, they are used for substance calcination, substance drying, casting and control processes, as well as for heat treatment of hardening and cleaning injection molds.

A muffle consists of a closed chamber made of refractory materials. It consists of a door through which you access the inside of the cooking chamber, in which there is a small observation hole and to introduce probes to verify and record the temperature inside the muffle. On the ceiling of the equipment is located a hole where gases leave the chamber. The walls of the muffle are made of plates of thermal and insulating materials.

When is a muffle used?

A muffle is used when it is required in the laboratory to reach temperatures higher than 350 °C. It is important to note that only refractory materials can be used inside the muffle as they are the only ones capable of withstanding the temperatures that develop in it. The objective of the mule will depend on the temperature they can reach and from there all the uses that can be derived. Reaching between 1100°C and 1700°C the muffle is the laboratory instrument that reaches the highest temperatures.

Its structure and design allows to maintain control over the sample introduced in the instrument, something very difficult to obtain with other types of furnaces; but very necessary to control the procedure. Although muffle is certainly not usually used in processes to heat samples with greater control, monitoring of the sample is still required. The muffle performs the furnace function in a fairly safe manner, but with the difference that allows to determine and monitor to a certain extent the conditions of the sample being subjected to high temperatures.

Uses of muffles in laboratories

Among the main uses of muffles we find calcining; this calcination process consists of subjecting an element to high temperatures until it decomposes. This process has many applications among them, removing absorbed moisture, carbon dioxide or oxidizing the substance. There are also processes of analysis of samples that are made from the ashes of these.

Muffle is considered an essential element in gravimetric analyzes, which are based on determining the elements and proportions in which they make up a sample. Since one of the steps involved in these analyzes is the drying and calcining of the precipitates, steps or stages performed on a mule.

Steps to Use a Muffle

When using a muffle, the user should put on the appropriate clothing such as gloves and apron, leave the muffle at least 15 cm away from other objects so that the heat circulates freely. As well as verifying that the mule is properly connected to the power source and thus load the samples to be processed. Once the working temperature is set on the equipment, no laboratory personnel should be located in the vicinity of the equipment without the protections noted above.

Other recommendations for using a mule are: not to connect it to a multiconnector or any connection that might overheat. Just like it is advised not to stand in front of the mule while it is operating. Taking these points into account, the rest of its operation is considered very simple.
