What are the types of moisture analyzers that exist?

The moisture analyzers work to calculate the moisture content of the matter, have halogen and infrared heating technologies, being methods adapted to the needs of quality control and production of the samples. The halogen analyzer is an evolution of the infrared drying method. The halogen technology is composed of a heating element, which consists of a glass tube filled with halogen gas and its advantage is that the halogen being of smaller volume, the maximum heating level is obtained faster, and provides results with an exceptional level of control and a uniform heat distribution. Infrared energy is not visible to the human eye. Red light is often associated with infrared heat, which is actually red light reflected from the visible spectrum.

On the other hand, the results of the moisture analyzer, are shown that the same results can be obtained, and with the same precision as with the official method, that is, the drying oven. It is perfect for daily repetitive moisture analysis tasks, such as checking production or items received.

Differences between a Halogen and Infrared Moisture Analyzer

A moisture analyzer is a device that effectively uses, dries a sample by transferring energy by radiation, that is, the transmission of energy in the form of waves or particles through a medium, which in this case, is the sample, or by convection, heat transfer by mass movement.

These analyzers have differences, since infrared heaters are not ideal, since they have a very large thermal mass and take significantly longer to heat up than a halogen heater, therefore, they are more difficult to control, and do not deliver optimal reproducibility in a moisture analyzer.

However, the compact nature of the halogen radiator improves the response time of heating and cooling, shortening the time it takes for the equipment to achieve its maximum heat power, and in this way, making the time it takes to complete the drying of the sample more efficient. This also allows for more precise control throughout the process.

Characteristics of Halogen and Infrared Moisture Analyzers

The functions of moisture analyzers are based on their characteristics, which are:

The infrared radiation method is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, being between microwave energy and visible light. Infrared waves include thermal radiation and have a wavelength frequency range ranging from 0.75 micrometers (long wavelength limit of visible red light) to 1.5 micrometers (microwave boundaries). These types of heaters are perfect for an environment, where the presence of glass components are prohibited for regulatory or safety reasons.

Halogen system heaters have a tungsten heat element, contained in a compact glass tube, filled with halogen gas to preserve this tungsten element. The halogen radiator emits infrared radiation in a short wavelength range of between 0.75 and 1.5 micrometers.

Therefore, both are responsible for evaporating the entire amount of water contained in the samples, and for maximum performance, the operator must be cautious when handling the equipment, since they are desiccating units, and can be hot.
