Anesthesia is used to avoid pain in patients during a surgical process and other procedures. They are applied during minor interventions, such as repairing a tooth, during the process of a delivery or colonoscopies. It is also used, during minor and major operations, in some cases, a dentist, nurse or doctor may give you an anesthetic. In other cases, you may need an anesthesiologist, a doctor who specializes in administering anesthesia.

This sedative may be administered by injection, inhalation, topical lotion, aerosol, eye drops or skin patch. They cause a loss of sensitivity or consciousness. Frequently, the combination of general and crazy anesthesia, are complemented for pain control and accompany a sedation so that the patient is semi-asleep and calm during the procedure.

Types of Anesthesia

There are several different types of anesthesia, in which a small part of the body is desensitized and applied in dental procedures or when sutures are required in which the patient can stay awake, is called local anesthesia.ย

Regional anesthesia is also found, which is applied to larger areas of the body, such as an arm, leg, or lower limbs, and is also used in deliveries and cesarean sections. Likewise, general anesthesia is one that affects the whole body, leaving the patient unconscious and unable to move. It is used during major operations, such as heart surgery, brain surgery, back surgery and organ transplants.

In another vein, the use of anesthesia while safe, there may be risks, especially with general anesthesia, including:

  • Arrhythmia or breathing problems
  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia
  • Delirium after general anesthesia, which causes confusion.
  • To regain consciousness during general anesthesia, this usually the patient hears sounds, but sometimes you can feel pain, although it is not common.

Application of Anesthesia

The anesthesiologist, is the only one in charge of applying anesthesia in patients under surgery and controls vital signs and that oxygenation, body temperature, ventilation, etc., are adequate throughout the process. To do this, it places different sensors that connect to monitors that analyze the signals coming from the patient.

Once the induction phase is completed, the maintenance phase begins.

  • Balanced anesthesia refers to the maintenance and control in the administration of the drugs necessary to develop the intervention safely. It can be done by venous, T.I.V.A. (Total Intra Venous Anesthesia) or by inhalatory route in which the drugs are applied by the machine with which the patient is being ventilated.ย
  • Resuscitation Unit: when the intervention is over, the anesthesiologist must stimulate the patient to wake him up and to do so cuts off the supply of drugs, and administers, if necessary, antagonists of the drugs he had used to stop them from working.ย

When the patient recovers the appropriate level of consciousness, the devices that would have been placed for the control of ventilation are removed and the patient is transferred to the hospital, where he will be monitored until the full recovery of his functions.
