Wheelchairs are tools to help patients who require it and favor the total or partial transfer of those who have lost the ability to move. Therefore, wheelchairs improve mobility for people who cannot walk or move by themselves, thus facilitating their autonomy and social integration.ย ย

Depending on the patient’s disability, the selection of a wheelchair is of great importance, since there are different types of wheelchair, and are suitable for the degree of disability of the patient.

Types of Wheelchairs

It should be noted that chairs should be suitable for the degree of motor disability that the patient has, and facilitating mobility. Therefore, there are different types, which are:

  • Electric Wheelchair: They are the most recommended chairs for those patients who cannot move with high spinal injuries, neuromuscular or degenerative diseases, which prevent movement. They are powered by a battery-powered motor, the electric wheelchair, is controlled through a device that allows you to determine the direction, speed and also in some cases the seat and backrest configuration.
  • Standing Wheelchair: It is the one that gives the patient the option to adjust it, so that it appears that the patient is standing and allows interaction with people and objects at eye level. In addition, the chair can change from sitting to standing.ย
  • Sports Wheelchair: They are the ones that are specially designed for sport, in which the patient is going to keep in constant movement from his upper limbs, and are the most common because they serve to practice basketball, tennis or paddle.ย
  • Manual Wheelchair: It is usually the most used chair for patients who are disabled indefinitely, and who can move their upper limbs, or in those who only have some difficulty walking without being disabled, and require it to be able to mobilize.ย
  • Children’s Wheelchairs: this type of chair are orthopedic and must have specific characteristics so that the infant is not limited to displacement. The folding mechanism should be simple to handle for the family. In stroller-type chairs, they can be folded by separating the seat unit from the chassis or folded without removing.
  • Bariatric Wheelchairs: are those chairs designed to support the weight of people who are overweight, obese or morbid. These chairs can withstand weights, depending on the case, up to 200 kilos.ย

According to the above, patients must take into account the criteria of wheelchairs, which more suit their needs and requirements, in addition to the dimensions of the same, the safety that transmits or the ease of folding and transport.

Importance of Wheelchairs

For disabled patients, the choice of wheelchairs that meet their needs and demands is of great importance, taking into account that they must ensure that all measures are taken correctly, and that they are supervised by the medical specialist.

Taking into account the characteristics of each chair, these are devices that provide support, so that the patient can sit and have somehow mobility on wheels to a person who has difficulty walking or moving. It should be noted that the types and models of chairs have been evolving to meet as best as possible the particular needs of each user.
