The heating mantle is an equipment used in laboratories for stable and uniform heating of samples and substances in round-based glass vessels such as volumetric balloons.
This equipment has the capacity to heat substances in a graduated manner, thanks to its controls that allow the user to set the desired temperature required by the procedure to be carried out.
How does the heating mantle work?
The substance to be processed must be introduced into a distillation or volumetric balloon. The blanket heats up slowly, which is why it can be heated during installation. The blanket produces heat energy, as it converts voltage (electrical energy) into heat. So, the blanket is placed around the balloon, and it is checked that it is in contact with the surface to be heated, thus heating the substance in the flask. The temperature regulator is switched on. At the end of heating, the container is removed. In the same way, the heating mantle also cools down slowly.
Components of a heating mantle
- Painted steel exterior.
- Heating elements: they are distributed throughout the fabric to heat quickly and reduce consumption.
- Switch: it is the one that makes the temperature control possible.
- Indicator light: this is the light that alerts you to the status of the blanket, indicating whether it is on or off.
- Signal lamp: indicates when the blanket is in operation and when it is not.
- Grounding: in the event of an insulation fault while the equipment is in operation or while connected to the electrical source, this is the system used for protection.
Precautions to be taken when using a heating blanket
- Use a power transformer to connect the equipment to the power source. Never plug the heating blanket directly into a wall outlet.
- Check the equipment for holes, scratches or damage before use.
- The voltage must be suitable for the equipment, since it works with a specific voltage. Otherwise, with a high voltage there is a risk of overheating, melting the fiberglass insulation and exposing the element to the heater directly. However, if the voltage is lower than required, the heating will not be efficient.
- The equipment should not be used in humid areas. It must be a dry environment.
- Do not allow the substance to be heated to come into contact with the blanket.
- It cannot be gasoline or any other flammable substance that will be heated. Heating such items will cause fire or explosion.
- The equipment must be disconnected for cleaning or maintenance.
