A colorimeter is an instrument used to measure and analyze colors. In other words, a colorimeter makes it possible to determine the exact composition of a color by providing precise and very objective measurements of the analyzed color, thus providing an accurate measurement of the intensity and hue of the color, which makes the colorimeter a frequently used instrument in colorimetry, a branch of science that studies colors and, especially, how to measure them.
For example, a colorimeter can be used to identify a particular color and replicate that same color later. These devices can also be used for color comparison. By detecting the composition of two different colors, you can determine, for example, which color is the darkest or lightest hue.
How is a colorimeter structured?
Colorimeters are usually composed of a light source and three filters. The light source emits light at a wavelength and then passes through a filter before impacting the object being measured. The light source is achieved with a lamp plus some additional filter. A dispersive system or equipment with a monochromator and a related radiation receptor simulates the eye and the observer. With the help of a fixture or sample holder, the object is precisely positioned. Modern equipment generally uses one of three light sources: halogen, xenon or LED lamps.
Colorimeters work with silicon detectors equipped with 3 or 4 interferential filters. Normally, by combining their respective properties the trichromatic perception of the color stimulus of the average human observer with daylight can be correctly simulated.
Colorimeter function
A colorimeter is a device that has the function of providing a numerical value to the color, determining its intensity and shades, precisely calculating the hue of a color. This equipment performs the task of quantifying the color and comparing it with another, generating a numerical value that is assigned to a color, which in turn allows the color to be properly classified in the color scale.
In the color measurement performed by this instrument, the object or sample is illuminated with a light source adjusted on a given illuminant. The reflected proportion of this light is dispersed with three filters in red, green and blue light. This process is similar to the way view works in humans, because the filter function simulates the three different types of cones. The numerical data thus obtained represent the absolute colorimetric measurements and the color difference between the color standard and the color sample.
Applications of colorimeters
Colorimeters are currently used in color classification, color calibration of printers, absorbance testing, correction and error elimination of monitors and displays, color-based polymer characterization, and chemical concentration testing.
That is, this equipment can be employed in industries of plastic, electronics, painting, ink, textiles, garments, printing and dyeing, food, medicine, cosmetics, scientific research institutes, schools and laboratories. Since it can not only help to perform color combination and color management studies, but also can control product quality management.
